The best 4K projector we have tested is marked down to its lowest price ever during Prime Day - Popular Science
We chose XGIMI’s Horizon Ultra as the best 4K projector you can get after conducting hands-on testing, and stand by that assessment nearly a year later. Right now, you can get the Horizon Pro for $250 less than normal thanks to a discount during Amazon’s October Prime Day (aka Prime Big Deal Days) sale. This deal is available to everyone, but XGIMI’ss other projector deals do require an active Prime subscription. Remember, if you don’t have an active Amazon Prime subscription, you can sign up for a free, 30-day trial here.
XGIMI HORIZON Ultra 4K Projector, $1,444 (Was $1,699.99) See ItWhat sets the Horizon Ultra apart from other 4K projectors is the overall quality of both the picture it creates and its physical design. A cover shields the projector’s lens from scratches and dust, and it slowly lowers each time you turn the Horizon Ultra on. This little gesture never gets old. I played video games and watched dozens of TV shows, movies, and YouTube videos during my tests, and the Horizon Ultra created a crisp, bright image every single time. Its 2300 ISO Lumen bulb was bright enough that I could use the projector in a room with moderate light leakage. This Horizon Ultra looked best when watching videos at night, but it’s nice to know that you can use it during the day, too.
XGIMI partnered with Harman Kardon for this projector’s speaker system, which was so good I never felt the need to hook the projector up to an AV receiver or external speakers. If I was setting up a permanent home theater system, I would take advantage of the Horizon Ultra’s HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) port to hook the projector up to a surround sound system, though. If you watch the latest shows or play high-end games you’ll be able to take advantage of this projector’s support for Dolby Vision HDR, which made images really pop in our testing. If you’ve been considering getting a 4K projector for your home theater system, we can’t recommend XGIMI’s Horizon Ultra enough—that’s especially true while it’s on sale for Prime Day.

KitchenAid’s Artisan Stand Mixer is my dream tool as an avid baker—it’s $100 off for Prime Day - Popular Science
KitchenAid’s stand mixers have been the gold standard of counter appliances for decades. While there are excellent alternatives out there, few have topped it. I’ve had the pleasure of primarily using a KitchenAid Stand Mixer for the past six years, and it’s absolutely worth the investment. That investment is less steep thanks to October Amazon Prime Day (Aka Amazon Big Deal Days). Remember, if you don’t have an active Amazon Prime subscription, you can sign up for a free, 30-day trial here.
KitchenAid Artisan Series 5 Quart Tilt Head Stand Mixer $349.95 (Was $449.99) See ItThe Artisan Series 5 Quart Tilt Head Stand Mixer is the model I use, and it’s currently $100 off. This stand mixer hits the sweet spot—baking pun intended—in KitchenAid’s multi-model lineup. Its bowl is big enough to accommodate double batches of cookie dough, cake batter, and whipped meringue. I’ve had no trouble throwing bigger mix-ins—think chocolate chunks or full walnuts—without hearing the motor strain. I found each piece of the mixer, from the speed control shifter to the hinge that moves as you lift and lower the top of the mixer downward, to be very well made, with no signs of wear after regular, repeated use.
KitchenAid bundles this mixer with a dough hook, beater, and whisk attachments, which is everything you’ll need to make thousands of baking recipes. However, the company also offers attachments that allow you to use this stand mixer to make everything from ice cream and pasta to sliced vegetables and freshly ground meat. Many of these attachments are also on sale during October Prime Day, and you can find them below. If I could only recommend one appliance to bakers, the Artisan Series 5 Quart Tilt Head Stand Mixer is what I’d choose, so don’t hesitate to pick one up while it’s on sale.

With fearsome feet, hawk-sized Cretaceous birds could scoop up baby dinos - Popular Science
Some of Earth’s most famous dinosaurs once called what is now the western United States home. However, dinosaurs including the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex and sturdy Triceratops, were not the only types of animals roaming the region 68 million years ago. They lived alongside two newly described species of bird called Avisaurus darwini and Magnusavis ekalakaenis. These early avians were about the size of a hawk and had strong enough feet to capture and carry off prey–possibly even small dinosaurs. The new species are described in a study published October 9 in the journal PLoS ONE.
“Based on clues in their foot bones, we think these birds would have been able to catch and carry prey, similar to what a modern hawk or owl does,” study co-author and University of Chicago PhD student Alex Clark said in a statement. “While they might not be the first birds of prey to ever evolve, their fossils are the earliest known examples of predatory birds.”
[Related: ‘Deep-snouted’ tyrannosaur fossils uncovered at construction site.]
The three fossils in this new study were recently uncovered in the Hell Creek Formation. This fossil-rich area in present day Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota was formed by ancient rivers that flowed from the Rocky Mountains into a large interior seaway. It was home to T. rex, triceratops, the stocky and fiesty Ankylosaur, and more before most dinosaurs went extinct about 68 million years ago.
When Clark first saw these fossils, they didn’t immediately jump out as something special. All three were just the part of the foot bone where the toes attach called the tarsometatarsus. The fossils had also been found on their own, without other body parts like claws or skulls. While the bones were pretty big for bird tarsometatarsi, they were still only about the size of an adult human thumb. Still, these bones held a ton of very useful data for the team.
“Every nook and cranny and bump that occurs on a bone can tell us something about where the muscles or tendons attached and how big they were,” said Clark.
The three fossil specimens (from left to right), Avisaurus darwini, Avisaurus sp., and Magnusavis ekalakaensis, all of which are represented by a tarsometatarsus. They are all shown to scale with one another. CREDIT: Alex Clark. There was a particularly noteworthy bump on these bones–a muscle attachment point called a tubercle. The tubercle was larger and farther down than in most birds.
“When we see tubercles this large and this far down in modern birds, they’re in birds of prey like owls and hawks,” said Clark. “That’s because when they hunt and pick up their prey with their feet, they’re lifting proportionally heavy things and holding them close to their bodies to stay as aerodynamically efficient as possible. These fossil ankle bones look like they’re built to do something similar.”
In the study, Clark and the team conducted several biomechanical analyses comparing the fossil foot bones to those of a variety of modern birds. According to Clark, the muscles of the bone and ankle work together like a lever. Comparing how far down the bone the muscle attaches can give scientists a solid idea of how strong the bone would have been and how it moved. The analyses revealed these feet would have been strong enough for these birds to pick up small mammals and potentially baby dinosaurs.
[Related: The first true flying vertebrates walked before they could soar.]
From the three foot bones, the team described two species new to science that are bigger than other known birds from the Late Cretaceous. Avisaurus darwini is named after Charles Darwin estimated to have weighed over 2.2 pounds. Magnusavis ekalakaenis is named in honor of Ekalaka, Montana, where the fossil was first uncovered. It is possible that the third bone may belong to another species, but it is very degraded and has made it difficult to tell.
All of these birds are members of the group called Avisaurids. They also belong to a larger group of birds called the enantiornithines. They date back to the Cretaceous Period and went extinct with most of their fellow dinosaurs when an asteroid struck the Earth near present day Mexico about 68 million years ago.
“These discoveries have effectively doubled the number of bird species known from the Hell Creek Formation and will be critical for helping us to better understand why only some birds survived the mass extinction that wiped out T. rex and the avisaurids described here,” Jingmai O’Connor, a study co-author and associate curator of fossil reptiles at the Field Museum in Chicago, said in a statement. “Alex has done a superb job with being able to extract so much incredible ecological information from just a single bone.”

Sonos’ Era 100 is my go-to smart speaker—it’s $49 cheaper on October Prime Day - Popular Science
The Sonos Era 100 achieves what most smart speakers aspire to be: sound great, designed well, and easy to repair. It’s also back down to its cheapest price ever thanks to a deal during Amazon’s October Prime Day (aka Prime Big Deal Days). Remember, if you don’t have an active Amazon Prime subscription, you can sign up for a free, 30-day trial here.
Sonos Era 100 $199 (Was $249) See ItThe Era 100 is Sonos’ latest entry-level speaker, and it was redesigned from the inside out to be a big departure from its predecessor. This speaker can play music in stereo thanks to its multi-driver audio system, though you can connect two for an even wider soundstage. I’ve listened to this speaker regularly for over a year and I’m continually impressed with how good it sounds. Bass frequencies sound deep without distorting, there’s plenty of midrange for vocals, and high frequencies never sound crispy from the speaker’s tweeters. Your mileage may vary depending on how the music you like is mixed and mastered, but the variety of classic and contemporary rock, pop, and jazz I listen to sounds great.
One of the big strides Sonos made with the Era 100 was introducing more means of connectivity. You can still stream music to the speaker over Wi-Fi, but you also have the option to connect to it via Bluetooth if your internet goes down. Sonos also offers a Line In adapter if you’d like to connect the speaker to a turntable or other wired audio source. My sole form of connectivity to the speaker outside of my testing period has been over Wi-Fi from Apple devices using AirPlay 2. Sonos has had trouble with speaker connectivity since the launch of its updated app in May, but I haven’t had any issues. If you rely on Sonos app-specific features, you should be more cautious. The Era 100 supports both Amazon’s Alexa and Sonos’ own smart assistant in case you’d like to operate it hands-free, but I’ve typically used it without either one. Ultimately, the Era 100 is the smart speaker I’ve listened to the most over the past year, and if you want to upgrade from an older model or give Sonos gear a shot, don’t miss this deal.

Why people insist they’re correct without all the facts - Popular Science
Getting into arguments with strangers online or family members at the dinner table can feel a bit like debating with a brick wall. We are probably all guilty of feeling like we are right, even if we don’t have all the facts. According to a recent psychology study, people tend to assume that they have all of the information that they need to make a decision or support their position–even if they don’t. This phenomenon dubbed the “illusion of information adequacy” is detailed in a study published October 9 in the journal PLoS ONE.
“Interpersonal conflict is on the rise, driving increases in anger, anxiety, and general stress,” Angus Fletcher, a study co-author and narrative theorist and neurophysiologist at the Ohio State University, tells Popular Science. “We wanted to look into those misunderstandings and see if they could be mitigated.”
Reading argumentsIn the study, the team from Ohio State, Stanford University, and Johns Hopkins University surveyed 1,261 Americans online. All of the participants read an article about a fictional school that did not have adequate water.
Group one read an article that only gave reasons why the school should merge with another that has better water. Group two read an article that only gave reasons for the schools staying separate and hoping for other solutions to the problem. Group three was the control group that read all of the arguments for the schools merging and staying separate.
[Related: The biggest consumers of fake news may benefit from this one tech intervention.]
They found that the majority of the two groups who only read the pro-merging or anti-merging arguments still believed that they had enough information to make a good decision about what to do. Most said that they would follow the recommendations in the article they read.
Those who read the “pro-merge” article were significantly more likely to recommend that the schools merge, while the “pro-separation” participants were significantly more likely to recommend that the schools remain separate. About 55 percent of the control group recommended the schools merge.
The participants who had half the information also said that they thought most other people would make the same decision they did.
The illusion of adequacyThe team calls this belief that we are correct–even when we don’t have all of the information–the illusion of adequacy.
Fletcher describes the illusion of adequacy as, “The less that our brain knows, the more confident it is that it knows all it needs to know. This makes us prone to thinking that we have all the crucial facts about a decision, leaping to confident conclusions and decisive judgments, when we are missing necessary information.”
[Related: The real reason people share so much fake news on social media.]
These findings also offer a complement to a field of research on naïve realism. This is the belief that an individual’s subjective understanding of a situation is the objective truth. Studies on naïve realism usually focus on how people can have a different understanding of the same situation. However, the illusion of information adequacy shows that people may share the same understanding, if they both have enough information.
Changing minds? The team found that some of those participants were willing to change their minds about their decision–once they had all the facts. The mix of opinions after hearing both sides was comparable to the control group–about 55 percent to 45 percent.
“If you give people a few pieces of information that seems to line up, most will say ‘that sounds about right’ and go with that,” says Fletcher.
Timing also plays a role. The main caveat is that the people in the study changed their minds about opinions that were recently formed. These were not ideas that had become deeply entrenched. For example, a second study conducted by this research group that centered on the death penalty was abandoned.
According to Fletcher, one of the best ways to fight the illusion of information adequacy when disagreeing with someone is to stop and ask, “Is there something that I’m missing that would help me see their perspective and understand their position better?”
“This can help eliminate unnecessary interpersonal conflict, allowing us to focus our energy on working through substantive differences between ourselves and others,” says Fletcher.

President Sets New Deadline for Replacing Lead Pipes - Planetizen
President Biden announced a 10-year deadline (starting three years from now) for U.S. cities to replace lead pipes in an effort to ensure safe drinking water, according to a report by Matthew Daly and Michael Phillis for the Associated Press. The rule replaces a less stringent standard set by the previous administration that did not require replacing lead pipes.
According to the EPA, the changes mandated by the new rule could prevent up to 900,000 infants from having low birth weight and avoid up to 1,500 premature deaths per year.
The new rule limits lead to levels of 10 parts per billion, down from 15 parts per billion previously. The rule also calls for cities to notify the public if higher levels of lead are found and to provide ways to limit lead exposure.
The cost of replacing lead pipes can be extremely high. In addition to $15 billion allocated to the issue in the 2021 infrastructure law, the administration is making another $2.6 billion available for drinking water infrastructure.

Tiny, doughnut-shaped robot can swim through snot - Popular Science
Moving through the world as a microorganism isn’t always easy. Bacteria and other small creatures squirming inside bodies often have to propel themselves through thick, viscous environments. For a human, this would look like someone awkwardly trying to swim their way through a pool of honey. Nature has already come up with creative solutions to this sticky problem. E.coli, for example, uses a corkscrew motion to cut through the muck while flagella contort their frames and whip themselves forward.
Now, using this natural adaptation as inspiration, researchers from Tampere University and Anhui Jianzhu University have created a new doughnut-shaped micro-robot capable of autonomously navigating its way through mucus and other goopy substances. The tiny robot design, which they believe could one day be used to deliver medicine through mucus, made reality a form factor first conceptualized nearly fifty years ago. The researchers published their findings this week in the journal Nature Materials.
Video: Untethered swimming through three-dimensional space in the Stokes regime. Credit: Zixuan Deng, Tampere University
The robot is just one millimeter long and has a “toroidal” (or doughnut) shape which lets thick, viscous materials pass through its exposed center. But the shape alone doesn’t make the robot move. For that, the researchers turned to a synthetic material called liquid crystalline elastomer. Exposure to light or heat stimuli causes this material to begin autonomously rotating. The researchers used a hot plate to apply constant heat to the elastomer-coated robot and found they could get it to propel itself forward through its environment.
Once exposed to light or heat, the robot is in “self-sustained motion,” which the researchers say lets it move autonomously. But it can also be steered. The researchers found they could induce the doughnut bot to move in a certain direction by varying the amount of light or heat exposure. Similarly, they could bring the robot to a stop by cutting off its access to light and heat altogether. The robot can also autonomously alternate between a rolling or self-propulsion mode depending on what’s best for navigating a particular environment.
This doughnut-like design, while a first for small, soft-shaped robots, isn’t an entirely new concept. The idea for the shape is attributed to physicist Edward Purcell in 1977. Purcell believed a toroidal body shape could improve the navigation of microorganisms in the “Stokes regime” which refers to areas where there are viscous forces and little to no inertia. This small robot proves that the general idea was correct.

Using tiny robots to deliver medicine through snotThough still early, the tiny doughnut bot could have real-world applications outside of the laboratory. Zixuan Deng, a Doctoral Researcher at Tampere University and one of the paper coauthors believes this underlying technology could be used by future doctors to deliver medication through mucus or even help unblock blood vessels.
“The implications of this research extend beyond robotics, potentially impacting fields such as medicine and environmental monitoring,” Deng said in a statement.
This wouldn’t be the first time scientists have considered sending small robots into humans. For more than a decade, researchers have designed small “nanobots” potentially capable of carrying materials through a body and even to particularly sensitive areas like brains and eyes. More recently, researchers from MIT created a soft, cucumber-inspired robot that can propel itself forward with an inchworm-like motion through blood vessels. The tiny doughnut robot goes a step further by introducing a method for moving through particularly sticky, viscous areas with a low complexity architect that only needs light or heat to get it moving. In other words, snot-traveling medical robots may be one step closer to reality.

400-Year-Old Oak Tree Designated as Historic Landmark - Planetizen
In a unanimous decision by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the “Old Glory” oak tree in Stevenson Ranch has been officially designated as a historic landmark. The tree, believed to be around 400 years old, was saved from destruction in 2002 after environmental activist John Quigley protested its removal by living in its branches for 71 days. Despite the challenges of relocation in 2004, the tree now thrives in Pico Canyon Park and stands as a symbol of resilience and community spirit.
As reported by Jake Rodriguez, the push for landmark status was led by the Santa Clarita Organization for Planning the Environment (SCOPE), which successfully gathered community support and petition signatures. Local advocates, including SCOPE president Lynne Plambeck, see the recognition as a meaningful step toward preserving the area's ecological heritage.
While “Old Glory” has been saved, advocates stress the need for stronger protections for other historic trees in the region. They call for more rigorous conservation efforts to prevent the loss of irreplaceable natural landmarks, citing the destruction of other significant trees in Los Angeles, like the Encino Oak Tree and the Wisdom Tree in Griffith Park, as reminders of the importance of preservation.

The Gila River Indian Community in Arizona activated the first solar-over-canal renewable energy project in the country, reports Shondiin Silversmith in the Arizona Mirror. It is the first phase in the Pima-Maricopa Irrigation Project Renewable Energy Pilot Project.
“The project spans over 2,700 linear feet of the Casa Blanca Canal, which is located along Interstate 10 near Sacaton” and, according to the tribe, “represents a groundbreaking solution to the intertwined crises of energy, water and climate change, specifically addressing the unique needs of the Gila River Indian Community, the State of Arizona, the southwest region and the Colorado River Basin.”
The project reduces water evaporation and maintenance requirements for the canal while producing energy and helping the tribe move toward a carbon-neutral energy footprint. The tribe is planning to expand the project to more portions of the local irrigation system.

Watch 2,200 pounds of explosives implode the Tropicana Las Vegas - Popular Science
The Tropicana received a very traditional Las Vegas farewell in the early hours of October 9th. At 5:30AM EST, the historic hotel and casino collapsed in seconds during a controlled demolition involving nearly 2,200 lbs of explosives strategically placed throughout the landmark’s pair of 23-story towers. A grand total of 917,400 square feet of steel and concrete fell to make way for a new Major League Baseball stadium that will host the city’s recently acquired A’s team, as well as a new resort overseen by the Vegas casino-entertainment company veterans at Bally’s.
Left: The marquee of the Tropicana in 1969. Right: Eddie Fisher, Eddie Cantor and Sammy Davis Jr. Images: Courtesy Bally’s CorporationAccording to the official announcement, demo teams laid 22,000 lineal feet of detonating cord through both the Paradise and Club Towers prior to implosion. Experts also created 220 cut-point locations for Paradise’s 490 lbs of explosives, while Club’s 1,130 boreholes were packed with another 1,700 lbs of the material to ensure a smooth event. While no public viewing areas were available to maintain a safe environment, operators bid goodbye to the Tropicana with a massive fireworks display accompanied by a choreographed aerial show featuring 555 drones.
The Tropicana Las Vegas was a city mainstay since its opening in 1957, and was known for its South Beach-inspired aesthetics that earned it the nickname, “The Tiffany of the Strip.” At the time of its ribbon-cutting, “The Trop” housed the city’s largest casino.

AirPods 4 vs. AirPods Pro 2 Buyer's Guide: 20 Differences Compared - MacRumors
Almost three years after the launch of the first-generation AirPods Pro, Apple unveiled the second-generation model alongside the iPhone 14 lineup. Although the second-generation AirPods Pro feature the same design as their predecessor, they improve on features like Active Noise Cancellation, in-ear detection, and battery life, while introducing new functionality like Adaptive Transparency, volume adjustment touch controls, and precision finding.

For an additional $50, the similarities with the AirPods Pro go even further with active noise cancellation, Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, support for Apple Watch chargers, and a speaker in the case for Find My.
Should you consider purchasing one of the fourth-generation AirPods models, or do you need the higher-end AirPods Pro, which sell for $249? Our guide helps to answer the question of how to decide which of these sets of AirPods is best for you.

The standard AirPods are now very similar to the AirPods Pro, offering almost all of the same key features at a lower price point. As a result, the fourth-generation AirPods should be the default choice for most prospective buyers. If you also have AirPods Max, which already offer ANC, and are looking for an additional pair of headphones to use while working out or on the go, the fourth-generation AirPods are also a good choice.
You should only buy the AirPods Pro if you are happy with its in-ear fit, which provides better sound quality and active noise cancellation, but can be somewhat uncomfortable for prolonger periods of time. While the fourth-generation AirPods do now offer ANC, it is not as effective as that of the AirPods Pro due to the lack of an in-ear fit, so if noice cancellation is your main priority, the AirPods Pro 2 are still the best choice.
In addition to better sound quality and ANC, the AirPods Pro 2 also offer slightly longer battery life, Conversation Boost, touch controls for volume, MagSafe charger compatibility, Precision Finding with the U1 chip, and a lanyard loop, as well as hearing protection, testing, and aid features via an upcoming software update. Many users will be able to justify the additional $70 to get the AirPods Pro as a result. Nevertheless, the fourth-generation AirPods are still a solid option for most average customers and will be better for those who do not like the AirPods Pro's in-ear silicone tips.
AirPods Pro frequently see hefty discounts on Amazon and other third-party retailers, so stepping up to the Pro version may be more worth it if you can take advantage of one of those deals. How Does Air Quality in a Philly Subway Station Compare to the Outdoors? - Planetizen
A study by Villanova University researchers Kabindra Shakya and Aimee Eggler reveals that air quality in downtown Philadelphia’s City Hall subway station is significantly worse than the street-level sidewalks in the same location.
As the authors explain in an article in The Conversation, “We focused on this station because our previous study found it to have the highest levels of particulate matter among 12 Philly subway stations we measured on the busy Market-Frankford or Broad Street lines.” They found 10 times more black carbon — also known as soot — in the station than outdoors, generated by the subway system itself.
“Limited access to outside air, the frequency of trains, a large number of passengers and its location in the heart of Center City may be some of the reasons for the high concentrations of particulate matter at the 15th Street station,” the authors add.
The city could improve air quality in the subway by replacing aging equipment and rails, adding platform screen doors, and increasing ventilation. However, the authors stress that they are not recommending people avoid the subway. “Air pollution levels are highly variable across stations and over time, and commuters spend relatively short periods of time inside subway stations.”

Stressed bees are pessimistic pollinators - Popular Science
The bees are having a rough go of it. Declining populations, parasitic wasps, and continued environmental degradation would be stressful situations for any species—and the planet’s vital pollinators appear to respond to pressure much like many humans do. New research published on October 9 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B from a team at Newcastle University suggests that just like us, bees are more likely to make pessimistic choices after being put through the ringer.
To test what happens when bees are under duress, the team first trained three groups of the female worker bumblebees to identify and associate different colors with varying outcomes—a blue LED screen represented a location with a sweeter reward, while green indicated a less favorable water solution. Once the bees understood each color’s reward amount, researchers then placed the groups in chambers with varying hues that fell in the spectrum between blue and green, then simulated a predatory attack for two groups, either by giving them a light shake or temporarily trapping them with a sponge-tipped robotic arm. Meanwhile, a third group faced no outside stress to act as a control.
The influence of stress on a bumblebee was unambiguous. In their results, the team concluded the perturbed bees were significantly less likely to interpret ambiguous colors as representing a better reward, and in turn, more frequently flew to lower reward locations than their control group.
[Related: Bumblebees carbo-load on the fly.]
“Our study shows that bees are more pessimistic after stress, as their behavior suggests that they do not expect to get rewards,” study co-author and animal behavior researcher Vivek Nityananda said in Newcastle University’s accompanying statement on Wednesday. Olga Procenko, the study’s lead author, equated the situation to “someone seeing the glass as ‘half empty,’” and expecting “negative outcomes.”
Nityananda went on to explain that while emotions are “complex states,” and for humans, involve a subjective understanding of feeling. But while we “might never know if bees feel something similar,” Nityananda concluded it’s clear that their decision making is influenced by stress towards making “pessimistic choices.”
The study’s results, according to Procenko, suggest that “states akin to emotion may be evolutionarily conserved.” Because of this further research may improve human understanding of the cognition and behavior of bees and other insect species can be affected by stress, be it environmental or human-induced. In doing so, better decisions can be made when it comes to implementing the best conservation solutions.

iPhone 16 Demand Dips Among Teens, But Interest in Apple Intelligence Could Still Spur Upgrades - MacRumors
A new report from Piper Sandler's fall 2024 survey provides a comprehensive look at how Apple products continue to dominate among U.S. teenagers. According to the survey, which involved more than 13,500 teens across 47 states, 87% of respondents said they own an iPhone. Additionally, 88% of teens expect their next smartphone to be an iPhone.
The data also highlights a marginal decrease in the number of teens planning to upgrade to the iPhone 16. About 22% of respondents said they intend to upgrade this fall or winter, which is a slight drop from the 23% who planned to upgrade to the iPhone 15 at the same time last year, and from the 24% for the iPhone 14 in 2022. The decrease suggests a growing trend of teens holding onto their iPhones for longer periods before upgrading, with the average iPhone now being three generations behind the iPhone 16. This is a notable shift from two years ago, when the average gap was only 2.5 generations.
Despite the slight decline in immediate upgrade plans, a significant driver of future purchases appears to be Apple's forthcoming suite of AI features. Nearly 30% of surveyed teens indicated that they plan to upgrade their devices because of Apple Intelligence, which Apple plans to roll out starting later this year.
In addition to iPhones, other Apple products remain popular among teens. AirPods continue to be a major hit, with about 70% of respondents reporting ownership of a pair. The report also noted that 25% of teens expect to purchase new AirPods in the next six months.
Meanwhile, ownership of other Apple devices including iPads and Apple Watches, is also strong, with more than 30% of teens saying they own each of these products. However, Apple TV+ appears to have less traction, as only 10% of teens reported using the service, and they spend only about 1% of their total media consumption time on Apple TV+. Apple Music, on the other hand, has maintained a steady presence among teens, with approximately one-third of respondents saying they have access to the service. Tag: Piper Jaffray

Will a HomePod Mini 2 Launch This Year? - MacRumors
Below, we recap rumors about a next-generation HomePod mini.
The firmest rumor came from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who in February 2023 said mass shipments of a second-generation HomePod mini would begin in the second half of 2024. However, it is unclear if that info is still accurate, as there have not been any recent HomePod mini rumors from credible sources.
Kuo did not reveal any new features planned for the next HomePod mini, but plausible upgrades could include a newer S-series chip for more advanced computational audio, a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for a lower-latency Handoff experience, and new color options. The current HomePod mini is equipped with an S5 chip and a U1 chip.
Apple has already refreshed the color options for the HomePod mini a few times. The speaker was released in Blue, Orange, and Yellow in November 2021, and Space Gray was replaced with a virtually-identical Midnight finish in July.
Due to the lack of recent rumors, the likelihood of a new HomePod mini being imminent seems low. However, a new HomePod mini could end up being a surprise announcement at Apple's rumored October event, or it could be introduced in a press release on the Apple Newsroom website at any point over the coming months.

What if ‘cotton candy’ planets are actually Ring Pops? - Popular Science
Beyond our solar system, there’s a whole selection of planets unlike anything we see around the Sun. In the cosmic candy shop, there are Ring Pops (less magnificent versions of Saturn), Hot Tamales (Jupiter-like planets close to their stars and blazing hot), and even cotton candy planets (big puffy gas giants that actually have the density of the cotton candy you eat!).
These extremely low density cotton candy exoplanets—known as super-puffs—are a big puzzle for astronomers trying to figure out how planets form. And, according to new research, some of them might not actually be so puffy after all.
“It’s very hard to form planets this fluffy,” says Yale astronomer Tiger Lu, lead author on the new work. “The standard idea of gas planet formation is that planets start as rocky cores, which then gravitationally attract and accrete gas from their surroundings…It turns out that in this standard model, it’s almost impossible to accrete enough gas to create the gas to rock ratio necessary for these cotton-candy like worlds.”
Super-puffs close to their stars are likely the result of the star heating up the planet’s atmosphere and fluffing it up. But there are a few strange super-puffs too far from their stars for this heating to work. One example is the planet HIP-41378 f, a gas giant with a three year orbit around an almost Sun-like star about 350 light years away from Earth. “None of the accepted puffing mechanisms are even remotely possible” for this world, explains Lu.
It’s important to note that the supposed ultra-low densities of cotton candy worlds come from measurements of transit depth, the amount of light that a planet blocks when it passes in front of its star. This quantity is proportional to how big the planet is—a bigger planet blocks out more light, and vice versa. But what if the planet isn’t actually that big, and there’s something else in the way blocking out that light?
“Both rings and moons are common among sufficiently large planets in our Solar System,” explains Yoni Brande, a University of Kansas astronomer not involved in the new study. “So why shouldn’t we try and see if they can explain some of the weird exoplanet data we’ve already got?”
Lu’s work shows that HIP-41378 f has been kicked around by gravity, tilting it on its side and conveniently making the rings visible to us in a way that would make the planet appear bigger when it transits. “If the planet were not tilted, we would view these thin rings edge-on and barely be able to see them,” says Lu.
Interestingly, planets really close to their stars couldn’t be tilted in the same way, meaning those particular super-puffs are likely explained by the more traditional ideas of heating instead of rings. “So, the further away a super-puff is from its host star the more likely the ring hypothesis is,” adds Lu.
Saturn Atmospheric Changes. Credit: NASA NASA/JPLThese rings wouldn’t be quite as magnificent as Saturn’s iconic bands, though. To explain the observations of HIP 41378 f, you’d only need about half the size of Saturn’s rings. Plus, Saturn’s rings are icy, which makes them sparkle to create the recognizable ringed planet we know and love. HIP 41378 f, on the other hand, is in a much warmer part of its cosmic neighborhood, making its rings more likely rocky and therefore less bright and exciting.
As with most areas of astronomy, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is likely to make a huge impact here. The authors propose that JWST could actually test the hypothesis that this particular super-puff is actually a ringed, not-so-puffy planet in the coming years. And there are more super-puff observations in the works around other stars, too, to help unravel the mystery of these weird exoplanets. “While I don’t think any observations of HIP 41378 f are yet planned with JWST, some other similar super-puff planets have already been observed and those results should be announced fairly soon,” adds Brande.

How “Walking Audits” Can Improve Neighborhood Mobility - Planetizen
Safe streets advocates have a simple starting point for making change to pedestrian infrastructure in their cities: taking a walk. As Edward Erfurt notes in a piece for Strong Towns, any effort to improve road safety starts with an evaluation of current conditions.
“The Strong Towns Crash Analysis Studio has helped residents of cities across North America review serious crashes in their communities,” Erfurt writes. The analyses brought to light oversights (for example, yield signs installed at four-way intersections rather than stop signs) and improper uses of road infrastructure.
According to Erfurt, “There is nothing more memorable and impactful than experiencing our communities with each other on foot. Something as simple as a walk allows us to have a conversation informed by the existing conditions, as well as letting us illustrate items like the economic benefits of pedestrian-friendly designs to local officials.”
A “walking audit” can offer a new perspective on a community and illuminate infrastructure needs. “In addition to members of the design team and traffic safety officials, a good audit will include a cross section of the municipality’s experts in areas such as engineering, planning, maintenance and law enforcement. It will also include any individual in the area known to have a disability or particular struggle that will be impacted by the design.”

Psychology can explain your childhood crush on a cartoon character - Popular Science
What’s the weirdest thing you learned this week? Well, whatever it is, we promise you’ll have an even weirder answer if you listen to PopSci’s hit podcast. The Weirdest Thing I Learned This Week hits Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and everywhere else you listen to podcasts every-other Wednesday morning. It’s your new favorite source for the strangest science-adjacent facts, figures, and Wikipedia spirals the editors of Popular Science can muster. If you like the stories in this post, we guarantee you’ll love the show.
(If you’re looking for the Libro.fm referral link Rachel mentioned in this week’s episode, here it is! Libro.fm is an audiobook platform that allows you to support your favorite local indie bookstores. This referral will get you three audiobooks for the price of one.)
FACT: Having a crush on a cartoon character is perfectly normalBy Amanda Reed
Raven from Teen Titans. Misty in Pokémon. Kovu from The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride. These are just a few cartoon crushes you’ll find listed in Reddit forums asking the same question: “Is it normal to have a crush on a cartoon?” And the answer is: Yes!
Getting a crush on a cartoon is similar to developing a crush on a real-life person. There’s lots of room for fantasy to exist and grow when we admire someone we don’t know well—we’re simply filling in the blanks with positive assumptions. And that’s even easier to do when you don’t know your crush at all, which isn’t just true for fictional characters.
“If you have a crush on Justin Bieber, for example, it’s as two-dimensional as having a crush on an anime character,” says Dr. Robin Rosenberg, a clinical psychologist in California who studies psychology and fandom. “The concept of Justin Bieber that you’re in love with is not a real person.”
Dr. Kathryn Seifert, a psychologist who has studied and written extensively about child development and sexuality, adds, “Children are not looking for a partner, they are trying to understand relationships … They are curious and learning about relationships and what they mean. It does not mean the same thing for a child to have a crush on someone and an adult falling in love with another person and having adult sexual feelings toward that person.”
So next time you find yourself blushing while playing as Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil 4 or deciding who will go on your “Hear me out” cake for TikTok, just know you’re not alone in your infatuation—that digital man made of polygons has great bangs and a cool jacket! It’s perfectly healthy for your brain to imagine a bunch of other great qualities for him—and for your heart to get all gooey about it.
FACT: We don’t actually know why hammerhead sharks are “like that”This week’s episode of Weirdest Thing features shark scientist and author Dr. Jasmin Graham. Her latest book is called “Sharks Don’t Sink: Adventures of a Rogue Shark Scientist.” On today’s episode, she answers the question she gets most often from shark fans: why do hammerhead sharks look like that? Scientists long assumed that there must be some awesome evolutionary advantage to explain their bizarre head shapes. But as Jasmin explains on this episode of The Weirdest Thing I Learned This Week, the truth is probably a lot more… random.
To hear more about Jasmin’s book, check out her recent interview with Rachel for Science Friday!
FACT: it’s possible that half a million people died over the course of five years simply because there weren’t enough vultures aroundVultures get a bad rap, as we’ve discussed in previous episodes. People focus on the fact that they projectile vomit when stressed and that they eat rotting carcasses butt-first for easy access, but they’re really cool birds. They’ve got, like, industrial-grade cleaning chemicals in their guts and microbiomes of steel. They also help keep humans happy and healthy.
Vultures can pick a carcass clean in less than half an hour, which means less rotting meat on the ground for dangerous bacteria and insects to grow in. They’re way better at spotting and devouring carrion than land scavengers like hyenas and wild dogs. One study found that decomposition is up to three times slower when vultures aren’t around to clean up carcasses. They’re so good at finding food that poachers often kill them to keep them from signaling the presence of a dead elephant or rhino.
They’re also considered a sentinel species, which basically means they’re on the frontlines when it comes to picking up pathogens and other dangerous stuff. If your local vultures are getting sick, that’s a sign something is really wrong with the dead animals they’re eating. And they can also sound the alarm on toxic substances introduced by humans. When the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac, which was once widely used in livestock, started killing off vultures in south asia, that helped us realize it was toxic to lots of animals and plants.
That brings me to the recent study I talked about on this week’s episode, which looked at how the diclofenac-driven dip in vulture populations impacted humans.
Back in the early ‘80s, there were more than 40 million vultures of various species in South Asia. But folks started to notice a sharp decline in the early 90s, especially in India. The population dropped by around 95%. Some individual species dropped by as much as 99.9%. I’ve seen a few experts say this was the fastest wild bird decline in recorded history.
It wasn’t until 2003 that researchers realized the common livestock anti-inflammatory diclofenac was to blame. It’s super toxic to vultures. One simulation model found that if only 1% of carcasses were contaminated by diclofenac, Indian vulture populations would fall by between 60% and 90% annually, and a study of carcasses showed that about 10% were contaminated. India banned the use of the drug in animals in 2006, but their numbers are still really low and they’re considered critically endangered.
According to recent research, the vulture decline has lead to more than half a million human deaths. Listen to the episode to find out how.

An analysis from Yardi Matrix highlights which U.S. cities are successfully meeting the demand for affordable housing — and which are falling behind. “The analysis compared the maximum allowable rent for fully affordable units with the average advertised rent for market-rate apartments, breaking the data into four levels of apartment quality,” explains Candyd Mendoza in MPA Mag.
“One of the key challenges identified is the gap between market-rate and affordable housing in many of the country’s largest metropolitan areas, including cities like Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, and Northern New Jersey.” San Francisco’s average market-rate rent is more than $1,000 higher than the average rent for affordable housing. However, smaller markets like Wichita, Kansas, Huntsville, Alabama, and Omaha, Nebraska have market-rate rents on par with affordable units.
According to the study, challenges to affordability include supply growth limitations and the composition of housing stock in different markets. “The study noted that 69,600 new affordable units are expected to be delivered in 2024, with a peak of 70,500 units projected for 2025. But after that, a potential slowdown in new inventory after 2025 could intensify the current shortage.”

iPad Pro Shipment Projections Slashed on Sluggish OLED Panel Demand - MacRumors
Released in May of this year, the 11-inch and 13-inch devices marked Apple's first use of OLED technology in larger screens and were initially projected to ship up to 10 million units in 2024. However, in its latest analysis, market research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) has significantly lowered that forecast to just 6.7 million units.
DSCC's Ross Young reports that shipments of the 11-inch model are likely to decrease by 40% in the third quarter and a further 30% in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter. The larger 13-inch model is said to be experiencing an even steeper decline, with shipments projected to drop by over 50% and 90% in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
Young attributed the lukewarm reception to several factors. The high price point, starting at $999 for the 11.1-inch model and $1,299 for the 13-inch version, may be deterring potential buyers who view tablets as complementary devices to smartphones or laptops. That's not to say that the new M4 processor and advanced display technology aren't impressive, but they may not provide enough incentive for consumers to upgrade their existing tablets. The limitations of Apple's iPadOS software could also be a factor.
The situation raises questions about the viability of OLED technology in maintaining Apple's premium pricing for tablets. Young noted that in the TV market, OLED has successfully competed with mini-LED technology, but the price differential remains a significant hurdle in the tablet space.
Apple is also said to be working on an OLED version of the iPad Air, and prior rumors have suggested that it will be released in 2026. However, due to sluggish sales of OLED iPad Pro models, Young expressed concern that the iPad Air's switch from LCD to OLED could be delayed by more than a year.
Despite the disappointing sales figures for the OLED iPad Pro, Young remains optimistic about the future of OLED in Apple's MacBook lineup. The analyst has previously predicted that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will switch from mini-LED to OLED as early as 2026. Young said he still expects stronger demand for OLED laptops compared to tablets, pointing at the increasing adoption of OLED displays by PC manufacturers.
MacBooks with OLED displays would offer increased brightness and improved contrast ratio compared to LCD models, and the displays would also be more power efficient for longer battery life. The switch to OLED displays could also contribute to future MacBook Pro models having a thinner design.Related Roundup: iPad ProTags: OLED iPad Pro, Ross YoungBuyer's Guide: iPad Pro (Buy Now)

Here's Why You Shouldn't Use iPhone Mirroring on a Corporate Mac - MacRumors
According to a new blog post by Sevco, the core issue lies in how iPhone Mirroring interacts with macOS's file system and metadata. When activated, the feature creates "app stubs" for iOS applications in a specific directory on the Mac:
/Users//Library/Daemon Containers//Data/Library/Caches/
These app stubs contain metadata about the iOS apps, including icons, application names, dates, versions, and file descriptions. While they don't include the full executable code, they provide enough information for macOS to treat them as installed applications.
The problem arises because many enterprise security and IT management tools routinely scan Macs for installed software. These tools often use macOS's built-in metadata system, which now includes these iOS app stubs. As a result, personal iPhone apps can inadvertently appear in corporate software inventories.
Sevco demonstrated this issue using the macOS command line tool mdfind, which interfaces with the Spotlight search subsystem:
mdfind "kMDItemContentTypeTree == com.apple.application" | grep Daemon
When executed in a Terminal window that has been granted full disk access without setting up iPhone Mirroring, the command returns a normal list of macOS applications. But when executed in that same Terminal window after setting up iPhone Mirroring, it also returns personal iOS applications and metadata.
For employees, this means that apps they use privately could become visible to their employer's IT department without their knowledge or consent. This could potentially reveal sensitive personal information, such as dating apps, health-related apps, or VPNs used in countries with restricted internet access.
Sevco has alerted Apple to this privacy concern, and the company is reportedly working on a fix. However, until a patch is released and widely implemented, the risks remain. For now, employees should avoid using iPhone Mirroring on work Macs. Companies should also be aware of this potential data liability and consider temporarily disabling the feature on corporate devices if possible.Related Roundup: macOS SequoiaTag: macOS SecurityRelated Forum: macOS Sequoia

Leaked M4 MacBook Pro Appears for Sale on Russian Classifieds Site - MacRumors
According to reports on social media, the listing on Avito advertised a 14-inch MacBook Pro featuring the next-generation M4 chip. The device was supposedly configured with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and offered in a new Space Black finish – a color currently exclusive to the M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro models. The asking price was said to be around 720,000 rubles (approximately $7,500), which is significantly higher than current MacBook Pro models.
Notably, it appears that multiple units of the unreleased MacBook Pro were offered for sale, suggesting a batch was stolen from a Chinese warehouse and somehow made it into Russia. The listing reportedly included a note stating that the price changes daily and buyers should confirm before purchase. However, as of now, these listings have been removed from the platform, which prohibits the sale of "nonexistent" products.
The latest leak comes on the heels of unboxing videos shared by Russian YouTube channels over the weekend. These videos purportedly show the upcoming MacBook Pro, revealing potential upgrades such as three Thunderbolt 4 ports for the base model (up from two previous-generation TB3 ports) and 16GB of RAM as the new minimum memory configuration.
While the authenticity of these leaks remains unconfirmed, they do line up with recent rumors about Apple's plans for its Mac lineup. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has suggested that Apple may introduce M4-powered Macs as soon as the end of October, with a potential release date of November 1.
If genuine, this leak represents a significant breach in Apple's typically stringent security measures. The last time Apple faced a leak of this magnitude was in 2010 when an iPhone 4 prototype was accidentally left at a bar in California.
Apple has not commented on these leaks, and it remains unclear how the company will respond to this apparent breach. As always, potential buyers should approach unofficial listings with caution, especially for unannounced products.Related Roundup: MacBook Pro 14 & 16" Tag: M4Buyer's Guide: 14" & 16" MacBook Pro (Don't Buy)Related Forum: MacBook Pro
